No Man’s Land explores the critical phase in the life of a growing company, where it is too big to be considered small but not yet large enough to be stable. This transitional period, referred to as “No Man’s Land,” presents unique challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs.
I’ve written about the phase that comes before “no man’s land, I call them the “Awkward Years”.

3) Design (How we’re structured)
What breaks: Roles get blurry. Managers get busy instead of effective. Handoffs fail.
What to install: Clear roles, sensible spans of control, meeting rhythms, and cross-functional ownership.
4) Decisions (How we choose)
What breaks: Either everything waits on the founder, or everyone decides differently.
What to install: Clear decision rights and a decision cadence. Decide what gets decided weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
5) Delegation (How leadership scales)
What breaks: The founder becomes the bottleneck. Accountability feels personal. Managers do not truly manage.
What to install: A real leadership team and delegation that sets expectations, support, accountability, and trust.
6) Data (What we measure)
What breaks: Growth eats cash. Forecasts are weak. Profit feels accidental.
What to install: Cash discipline, a handful of leading indicators, and a simple operating dashboard.
7) Delight (How we deliver)
What breaks: Quality gets inconsistent. Customer experience depends on heroics. Referrals slow down.
What to install: A few “must-win” core processes that make delivery repeatable and excellent.

Not all small businesses should be become big companies. Bigger is not necessarily better.
It’s estimated that only about 5% of all businesses make the leap to “Gazelle” (100+ employees or $50M+ Revenue). It’s wise to do some soul-searching and ask yourself why you want to grow, and whether or not you want to make the leap from small business to Gazelle. Many count the cost and decide to remain “small” on purpose. However, we believe it’s best to do that with eyes wide open, with intentionality, rather than accidentally.
