6 Random Snippets for Growth & Inspiration

1. Some down sides of remote work:

This University of Chicago study followed over 64,000 remote workers at Microsoft and found some surprising results: (1) Business groups became less interconnected by going remote. In short, groups tended to become more siloed and less likely to interact with “secondary” networks thereby decreasing access to new information. (2) Less time collaborating meant less room for serendipity and new ideas/solutions/creativity to arise. In the long-run this could potentially mean less innovation and weaker ties between employees and teams. It’s one more thing to consider when thinking about remote or not.

2. “If you’re not actively growing, you’re probably not growing.”

This is a thought I’ve had in recent months that keeps coming back up.

3. The power of believing in someone

Sahil Bloom tells this wonderful story on Twitter of how his high-school baseball coach saw something in him that he didn’t even see himself. And it was all the difference and changed the trajectory of his life for the better. Who are you believing in?

4. David Weekly, founder of $3Billion home construction company, has personally interviewed every one of their 1,600+ employees AND their spouses

And…the company is flourishing. They’re consistently rated one of the top 10 places to work in the U.S. Almost no one leaves, and they are a top rated builder. This inspired me to start interviewing the spouses of each new hire we make moving forward. What an awesome idea! Here’s a link to a podcast interview with David.

5. This factory in Illinois actually listened to their employees and they are THRIVING as a result

Highly recommend this 6 minute interview discussing the unique and human-centric things CHI is doing, and how their people are thriving AND their productivity as well as profits are through the roof as a result.

6. “No lumps in the carpet”

That’s one of Soul Cycle’s core values meaning, “Don’t let unresolved relationship issues get swept under the rug.” First off, it’s sound wisdom (we all need it) and second, it’s an great example of a meaningful, authentic, and delightfully worded “core value”.
